Day #11, February 11th, 2016.

Quote from Im Juli (2000).

I like to say to people to whom I recommend movies habitually, “There is nothing a Fatih Akin movie cannot teach you about life.”

The German-Turkish auteur constructs his films from the most basic ingredients of actual life; then gleefully subverts them into absurd comical situations, shifting from moments of infantile belly laughter to a scene of dizzying metaphorical and existential dread without giving us a moment to administer the change in our brains.

The wildly funny and sweet Im Juli is just one of the examples in that very feathered hat. One of the best romantic comedies out there, and my personal favorite road-trip film of all time.
